Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the lived experiences of parents and caregivers of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and the impact these experiences have on healthcare interactions and outcomes.
  2. Identify common barriers and challenges faced by individuals with IDD and their families across the healthcare continuum, including communication, access to care, care coordination, and navigating complex systems.
  3. Recognize the value of family and caregiver expertise as essential partners in developing individualized, person-centered care plans for patients with IDD.
  4. Demonstrate strategies for compassionate communication that promote trust, dignity, respect, and collaboration with patients with IDD and their families.
  5. Apply family-centered care principles to improve the patient and caregiver experience during clinical encounters, transitions of care, and decision-making processes.
  6. Reflect on opportunities to reduce bias and assumptions and foster a more inclusive healthcare environment that supports the unique needs and strengths of individuals with IDD and their families.
  7. Explain how family advocacy and partnership have contributed to the development and advancement of IDD-focused programs and services, including initiatives supported through grant funding.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, The Cooper Health System is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
