Overview


- Explain the indications, contraindications, and physiological considerations of various    mechanical circulatory support devices commonly used to support patients in cardiogenic shock and device or devices appropriate for specific clinical circumstances.
- Develop an approach to detect and troubleshoot malfunctioning and malpositioning of various mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices commonly used to support patients in cardiogenic shock.
- Interpret the literature and best practices for managing patients with cardiogenic shock and determine exit strategies and liberation from mechanical circulatory devices.
- Describe best practices and available literature through case-based discussion for the use of anticoagulation, sedation/analgesia, and antimicrobials in patients requiring mechanical circulatory support.

Utilization of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Support for Cardiogenic Shock

  • Illustrate basic concepts of supporting patients in LV or biventricular failure, with specific focus on veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. 

Long-term MCS Support LVAD - Introduction and Emergency Troubleshooting

  • Provide an overview of indications of long-term MCS support LVAD.
  • Describe the approach to trouble shoot LVAD emergencies. 

Comprehensive Management of Acute and Chronic Failure:  MCS Strategies and Support

  • Provide an overview of identification of right ventricular failure, differentiation of etiologies, and management using mechanical circulatory support.
  • Illustrate the basic concepts of RV support devices. 

Troubleshooting Intra-aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) and Temporary Percutaneous Left Ventricular Assist Device

  • Interpret intra-aortic balloon pump waveforms, interpretation of placement signal waveform and motor current waveform of temporary percutaneous left ventricular assist device.
  • Illustrate the troubleshooting approach for malfunctioning/malpositioned support devices commonly used in patients with cardiogenic shock.
